My Students

My students are lovely kids who lack the advantages provided youngsters from middle-class and wealthy school districts. All are English Language Learners, most come from high stress living situations. Many have parents who are ill, deceased, incarcerated, working several jobs or struggling to find work. A tragic number of them have lost loved ones to COVID-19 and/or have been struck by the virus themselves. Many have been exposed to sometimes extreme violence. Some of our students, though born here, come from families with undocumented adults and live with the fear of seeing their families split in two. Others have sought refuge here because their home nations are at war. All of our kids hope to overcome the trauma of their lives to become successful in whatever way they define this and our teaching staff is here to support them.

My Project

My students, all immigrants, some from Afghanistan and Haiti, have had to endure more in their young years than most of us do in a lifetime. As they return to school (or attend in person in the U.S. for the first time), they come bearing the weight of their family struggles, the stress of attempting to learn English and follow along with content classes remotely for 15 months and a future that continues to be fraught with uncertainty. Weighted lap pads offer “pressure therapy” — a calm-inducing amount of pressure, that will soothe them as they sit at their desks. Offering our kids comfort as they settle into a new routine will help make school feel like a safe place again. It will also allow them to lower their affective filters (the defense mechanism that makes learning difficult under stress) so they can learn. Learning can't happen unless a child feels safe.... these lap pads will be part of ongoing trauma-informed lessons to teach students how to self-comfort, calm themselves and direct their attention in a productive way.
