Help Mrs. Loos

As part of our music curriculum, students are constantly learning about different cultures and musical instruments that they have never seen before. I would like to make these experiences more real by providing examples of ethnic instruments in my classroom. Right now I can only provide them with pictures of people making music on these foreign instruments. Our school does not have the funds necessary to purchase these materials. Making the connection from pictures on a page to an actual, real-life object that they can touch and play will increase their interest level and broaden their musical horizons. Real experiences playing instruments from another culture will make the cultures around the world more real to my students. It will also increase their appreciation of things and people who are different from their everyday experience. Cultural appreciation is something that our students are just beginning to struggle with as our community grows in population and diversity. We are starting to see the beginning of possible racial tensions in some classrooms. I hope, in some small way, I can contribute to the students tolerance and appreciation for world cultures through music education in my classroom.
