Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a newcomer specialist in a low-income community. That means I work with recent immigrant students across multiple grade levels to help them learn English and integrate into life in the United States.

Most of my students are indigenous Guatemalans who are acquiring English as their third language, after Mam and Spanish, and many of them had limited opportunities for formal education before immigrating.

These kiddos are highly motivated to learn. They need rich opportunities to accelerate their learning of both language and content, so I try to teach through engaging projects related to science and social studies. They also bring a deep knowledge of life in their home communities, which we try to tap into as we study new topics.

My Project

My students and I are very excited to get back to learning together at school. However, we live in an area with high rates of COVID transmission, and parents are nervous about their students spending long days indoors. Furthermore, I work with small groups of students from multiple classrooms, so there's a risk of cross-class exposure when we come together.

Our school has a beautiful garden with benches, and I want to take my intervention students outside for our daily lessons to keep them safe and inspire them.

Sometimes we will be utilizing the garden itself, studying nature and food, but sometimes we'll be doing traditional learning, just outdoors. Not only is it safer, but children love the peace and shade of our garden, sitting under the fruit trees and grapevines.

We need special supplies to make outdoor studies practical--a weatherproof easel for showing lessons, clipboards for writing, waterproof pouches for holding all our supplies and keeping our papers dry, vinyl spots to sit on if our seats are wet or dirty.
