I'm excited to teach at a growing program, the second year of the first new school in Oakland Unified in ten years. We are located in a low-income neighborhood near the Oakland Coliseum, but its innovative program is attracting students from all over the city.
Some students come from different dual immersion elementary schools, while others are new arrivals to the US who are relieved to find that their second language is seen as an asset, not a problem.
Many of them come from extremely low-income backgrounds and their families are struggling to make ends meet in a city that is getting outrageously expensive so fast.
My Project
We had a fantastic first year - the students learned how to create programs, about different sensors that robots can have, and each group designed and programmed a short robot dance.
Students are excited and inspired to learn coding with Scratch and the mBot system, but our seventh graders are ready for the next level challenge.
Lego Mindstorms is the state of the art when it comes to robotics engineering and education for this age group. By making this kit available for the advanced group, the beginners will be more inspired to work harder and get to that advanced level.
More than half of students from low‑income households
