Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"I'm like a teacher who gives you something to take home to think about besides homework"-that's what Lily Tomlin's Edith Ann said once on the Electric Company. I want to give my kids an opportunity to think about stories at home.

I teach an incredibly sweet bunch of kiddos.

Our school is located in an area that has a low socioeconomic status and many struggle with reading because English is a second language for them. Their parents are always supportive and want to help them at home, but sometimes they can't read English themselves or aren't able to afford to give them the same experiences students in other areas are exposed to.

My Project

I am requesting ipods where I could record stories for them daily. They would make little homework bags and take the ipod and book home to listen to someone reading aloud fluently. I used to do this with cassette players and the kids loved it, but it was hard for them to rewind and flip the tapes over. Even though the kids were very responsible, the walkmans didn't hold up very well to constant use. These ipods would not only give them experience with new technology, but would be very easy for them to manipulate-all they need to do is press play! That way no matter how busy a family is, every night the children will be able to hear someone read to them fluently. When I did the cassette players, one of my parents told me their son used to fall asleep with it playing at night. They really do love to listen to their teacher reading.

There are numerous studies showing that kids who are read to at home are more successful in school.

They develop a better vocabulary and learn to become fluent readers themselves. More than that, we can help them develop a passion for reading. Introducing them to exotic adventures, stories about history, and characters who are brave and strong. Kids need to develop a love of reading-it will help them in every aspect of their academic lives, and you can help make that a reality for them.
