My Students

Our students have intellectual disabilities and physical disabilities. Many of our students face health challenges due to the severity of their disability. Several of our students face additional struggles such as poverty, hunger, or homelessness. Our students speak many different languages and are mostly Black, Indigenous, or People of Color.

Our students have an innate capacity for connection and self-expression in and through music experiences.

Through music, many of our students are able to more easily access communication and expression modalities that build their self-esteem, resilience, independence, and community involvement skills.

In music therapy, our students are learning social-emotional skills such as cooperation, calming and coping skills, and kindness, so they can cope with difficult situations, and get along with peers and family members. Our students are also learning skills such as joint attention, attention to task, and following directions.

My Project

This project is organized by 8 music therapists who serve over 500 students in a diverse, urban school district. We want our students to begin their year in distance learning with hands-on materials they can use for synchronous and asynchronous music experiences. The wide variety of music and movement materials will give students the opportunity to make creative choices. Students will use the buckets to store their materials and also for drumming. Students will use the dowels for drumming and rhythm interventions that will support both academic and also social-emotional learning. The banners will be cut apart so that each student has 2 scarves to use for music and movement. The vinyl material will be cut into shapes to support color and shape identification during music-based movement games. The maracas will be used for rhythm, body part identification, and bilateral movement.

Because we will begin the school year in distance learning, our students will need access to these hands-on materials to support social-emotional and academic learning in and through music.

With these materials, music therapists, music therapy interns, classroom teachers, related service professionals, EAs, and TAs will collaborate to support student's music-based social-emotional and academic learning on a virtual platform.
