Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students arrive in the classroom full of curiosity and enthusiasm, ready to explore and learn. The goal of our program is to instill the love of learning by using hands-on materials. My students love learning through play. They can’t wait to build with blocks or dress up as different characters to role-play stories. I love looking at their faces when we do simple science experiments such as mixing colors or inflating a balloon using baking soda and vinegar. Their surprised faces speak for themselves. It brings joy to my heart to watch them grow into inquisitive learners who always ask “why”. My school is located in a low-income community (Brownsville) which was one of the neighborhoods that were hit the hardest with the virus. The children did not have access to simple materials because they live in shelters. Many of them connected online through cell phones and tried their best to keep learning by doing the activities, their creativity, and their parents’ creativity shone. My students are so eager to learn and so excited about everything that surrounds them.

My Project

I want to provide my students with hands-on materials that they can use at home to support their learning. Students in my classroom learn through play and hands-on experiences. Many of my students do not have access to simple materials such as paint or play dough, making it difficult for them to completely engage in the lessons. With the materials I receive, I want to create “Take Home Learning Bags” for my students so they can be ready for blended learning. I have listed materials needed to develop their fine motor skills such as play dough, foam stickers, and eye droppers; materials to develop their creative, visual arts skills such as the finger paint, paper, and glue; materials to develop their social emotional skills using the cultural diverse people to identify themselves and body parts; materials to develop their cognitive skills such as blocks to create structures, Unifix cubes and counters for counting, sorting and making patterns, using the magnetic alphabet letters to recognize letters and spell their names; and materials for STEAM activities such as the craft sticks, pompoms, and play dough. During the spring, I tried to use materials that they would find in their homes but even this was difficult because many of them live in shelters. My goal is to provide my students with the materials that they can keep at home to help them engage in learning.
