Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The best way to learn science is through hands-on scientific inquiry. When students are encouraged to work through scientific problems, they access higher-ordered levels of thinking. Hands-on experimentation also helps learners make real-world connections to textbook concepts. The students at our school come from a diversity of backgrounds, including disadvantaged socioeconomic situations. Many of our students are still learning English as a second language. Yet the only limit to their dreams is the limits imposed on them. A large portion of our population has never had access to an inquiry driven science curriculum before. Our department is working hard to change that. Science is a hands-on field, and inquiry is at the root of every field of science. Every student deserves a hands-on experience to make learning fun and engaging.

My Project

Students will be able to check out take-home labs to reinforce in-class concepts. These take home labs will encourage independent inquiry and problem solving, while also increasing parent involvement. The requested kits will be modified and individually packaged to reinforce and extend classroom concepts. For example, students may learn about the macromolecules of life in class, then take a kit home to build what the macromolecules look like, allowing them to visualize abstract concepts like monomers and the importance of carbon. Students will then have the opportunity to extend their thinking even further and think about ideas they would like to design and implement themselves.

Students coming to our school have not had nearly the exposure to inquiry-based learning that they should have at this stage in their life.

Because of standardized testing and the biology end-of-course exam, I am unable to offer nearly as many inquiry-based, slow paced activities as I would like. This project will allow students to still have the opportunity for self-lead inquiry, without the time constraint of 90 minute block scheduling.

Yet another added benefit of this project is the impact in terms of parent involvement. If parents see their students engaging in something hands on and interesting, it gives parents an opportunity to become involved in their children's learning. Many of our parents often feel powerless because they don't know how to help their high school students with their work. By simply asking basic questions and taking an interest in what their student is doing, parents will play a meaningful role in their student's education. Moreover, those students will also gain knowledge and confidence by explaining the concepts to their parents. Good science is all about asking questions, and these kits will allow students to do just that.
