Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This year, we are working on building a boat and sailing it in the East River. The students are learning to work with blueprints and marine tools to replicate boat building technique used in shipyards throughout the world. I have a class of 12 students who are extremely excited about building a boat. This class provides students with the opportunity to experience a hands-on STEM based activity in building, creating and learning the mechanics involved when creating a boat.

In my experiences with immigrant and low-income youth over the years have confirmed that my students should deserve an equal chance as all other students to be successful.

Each student in my classroom often find it difficult to take chances and feel inadequate due to their environment of learning. Some of the benefits my student leave with from this class are teamwork skills, taking risks, and building confidence.

My Project

This year, the New York City Department of Education planned for students to be 100% in-person and learning while maintaining social distance. I am currently teaching students how to use an online platform to learn and trying to make lessons as engaging as possible. Some of our students are living in shelters and they do not have access to internet or technology at home. Despite the challenges they face daily, they continues to show up, persevere, and achieve great things academically. We rely on using technology in the classroom to give students the best learning experience possible. Since the Department of Education is having trouble funding schools lately, most of our technology is obsolete.

At the end of the day, the only way to make learning successful is to make sure we were able to connect with our students.

Our school has very old computers compiled with technology issues that our students are having at home. We are inundated with dropped internet connections and delayed audio and video feeds while trying to connect with our students when using these devices. Teachers and students shouldn't be having this dilemma! Using the Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 will provide reliable service to students. The laptop touch screen capability is one way the laptop will be used in the classroom. Math is one of the hardest subjects to teach online without showing work. The ability to write on the laptop free hand and project to the students will reach many of our students. We greatly appreciate you considering our Donors Choose project and we are fully committed to making sure that every dollar goes to the bettering of learning.
