My Students

Our school is close to two military bases, and many of my kids are the children of deployed military personnel. The school is urban and old. We do not qualify for Title I, but 68% of my students receive free or reduced-price lunch. Many of my students are here in the United States for the first time, and English is not their first language. My students have limited access to libraries, books and technology outside of school. Right now, they are often bullied because they do not have the financial support that other students have.

My students love coming to the library, and they want to learn how to read, but it is often difficult to find something they can read for enjoyment and recreation.

Most of my students do not have funds for frills like books or recreational activities.

My Project

My first graders love to come to the library. They love their library lessons because they get to learn about authors, books and characters. They love learning to share and care for books. Unfortunately, the books in our school library are worn out from being loved by previous students.

This year, I want to celebrate the classics of children’s literature and highlight the importance of reading by introducing my students to authors like Tomie DePaola, Donald Crews and Ezra Jack Keats.

To encourage my first graders to read, I plan to create a semester-long exploration/celebration of Caldecott Award winning authors and their characters unit. Students will study books, learn to draw the characters and then write their own books featuring the famous characters. I am requesting new, clean copies of the copies of 15 different books and three book characters. The books I have selected are a variety of classics that team a simple, straightforward plot structure with colorful vocabulary, a strong storytelling sense and well-developed characters.

My first grade library students need some new picture books to learn about Caldecott Award author/illustrators. Help me create interest and excitement in reading. These books will reduce the threat to reading success that my students currently face.
