My Students

I teach at a Title I school in West Harlem. My students are bright, motivated, and passionate. Most of my students come from low-income families. Many must endure the stress of homelessness, poverty, divorce, and neighborhood violence.

My students come to school every day full of enthusiasm for learning.

Most of my students don't have books at home, and we don't have a school library. Therefore, my students rely on our classroom library to find books that captivate their imaginations and encourage them to read.

My Project

My students need great book series to help them become passionate readers! My first graders are just learning to read. Many of them struggle to read every word on a page. I'm asking for twenty different book series that are exciting, engaging, and funny to keep them motivated! We need timeless classics including Cam Jansen, Frog and Toad, Captain Underpants, and Ramona Quimby, as well as plastic bins to store them!

These series will hook my struggling readers, because they are books they can and want to read!

There is extensive research that shows the best way to become a better reader is to read more. To increase the quality and quantity of reading in my classroom, I need great books that appeal to a variety of interests and reading levels.

Book series are an especially powerful tool for supporting struggling readers, because they help children develop a connection to characters. Children become invested in storylines and devour book after book in a series to discover what happens next. Adding these books to our classroom library will allow students to choose from a great selection of high interest literature.
