I am the Project ARTS Coordinator at The Danny Kaye School, an elementary school in Brooklyn, NY serving 815 students, with 95% eligible for free lunch. As part of our arts program we have a Steelband and a Chorus. Our annual concert, as well as our Fashion Show is well attended by parents and community. We do not have a video camera for our arts education program, and students participating in these events do not get to see how they presented themselves on stage. Our goal for September, 2005 is to have a video camera to not only record events to share with the performing students, but also to begin an archive of school events. Many of our students can use some positive feedback to help build self-esteem, as well as to reinforce their positive traits. At our recent Fashion Show, one parent recorded and presented the event as a slideshow, using digital pictures. It was amazing to see students' reactions as they viewed the still images. Imagine the effect if the event had been video taped. Please help us to give our students some positive motivation. Our entire student population would benefit from this gift, as events could be replayed (during recess or at other occasions), giving the participating students the opportunity to see themselves, so that they could learn from it, as they critique their work and search for ways to improve it. This would be very beneficial to the performing arts classes, where teachers could guide students as they monitor their development.
