Remember when you played tag, softball or simply ran around in your neighborhood. Today our children seem to play less outdoor sports and rather play on the computer, watch TV or play those video games. Well unfortunately for our student’s in the Bronx, playing in their neighborhood isn't an option. Many of our neighboring building are public housing facilities. Our students are concerned about safety within their communities. As a result they lack the opportunity to build social skills, teamwork and communication skills that we were fortunate to have. As a member of our school, we provide a safe and nurturing environment where our students may run around and play cooperatively. But cooperative sports and teambuilding activities require funds that our school can not provide. The emphasis on classroom achievement is incomplete without the mind and body working together. Let’s allow our students to reap the benefits of outdoor play. Consequently, they will be better problem solvers, decision makers and productive members of society. Teambuilding activities and resources such as 1 padded tunnel for obstacle courses, 2 disco sit Jr. for balancing, 1 rolling river game to work together, 1 Co-Oper blanket to build teamwork, 1 scooter hockey and 1set of scooter to build teams, 1 pass it on game to build critical thinking and teamwork and 1 medium hoop along ball to add to the obstacle course. I am a speech teacher working with children on the Autism Spectrum in an inner city community school. Much of the materials we require is expensive but I am certain you will find it in your heart to help reach these disadvantaged students in the Bronx. Together we can help propel these students to reach their highest potential.
