Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

For the last six years I have taken my classes (4th, 5th, 2nd, and 3rd grade) to see live theatre at TADA! Youth Theater in Manhattan. For most of my South Bronx second-graders it will be their first time seeing a live theatrical performance. There are a number of things that make TADA! an ideal experience for my kids: 1. The shows are always original musicals, which really hold the kids' interest. 2. The shows have a narrative story that can be discussed and analyzed as literature. 3. The shows are an hour-long, the perfect length for an elementary school audience. 4. Although the shows are professionally produced (adult writers, composers, directors, musicians and set, lighting and costume designers) they are performed entirely by New York area school children. 5. The casts are multi-racial (and multi-talented.) 6. The seats are great and the production values are first rate. See www.tadatheater.com. Every year we spend a lot of time preparing for the show and discussing and writing about it after we see it. It is one of the highlights of the school year. Unfortunately, every year I struggle to raise funds for this event. Sometimes I have paid for it, sometimes I have raised money from friends and relatives. Our principal does not allow us to ask the families for any money since many cannot afford to contribute. There are three shows this year. The first, in January, is a revival of a show called "Everything About School (Almost)." This show, one of my all-time favorites, tracks eight kids through elementary, middle school and high school. It is funny and touching. I'm not ashamed to say I misted up last time I saw it. The second show, in the spring, is a world premiere production called "Crime-Solving Kids" which should have tremendous literary resonance for my many students who are familiar with the genre and kid sleuths like Cam Jansen and Nate the Great. TADA! also does a third show in the summer. Every year I offer to take all the kids from my class who are around to the summer show. Last month I took a group of kids to see the summer show "Everything About Camp (Almost)." Next summer's musical is "Adventures From Ezra Jack Keats." It is based on the works of this wonderful children's book author and illustrator, it should be especially rewarding, since we can focus on the stories in June to get ready. These three shows will be a centerpiece of our school year, not only as an educational activity that crosses the curriculum but also as a fun and exciting event for a group of kids who rarely get out of the South Bronx.
