My Students

My students are very energetic and expressive 1st graders. They are curious and are becoming great problem solvers. They love math, science, and technology despite the fact that our technology is quite limited. They live in a low socioeconomic urban area and do not have access to technology opportunities that 1st graders in other areas have. Most of my students do not own computers or tablets. In fact, many do not have pencils or crayons at home to do their homework or even to draw pictures.

Unfortunately, we only have two very outdated desktops in our classroom.

Therefore, students only get to go on the computer 1 or 2 times per week for 20 minutes. Our games and programs are so outdated that they kick the students off the site or freeze. Then I have to go solve the problem and often have to shut down the computer. This is time consuming and frustrating for us all.

My Project

Currently, my classroom has two, dusty, outdated desktop computers. Sadly, many of my students do not have access to computers at home either. Despite this lack of technology, I need to give each of my first grade students a grade in technology on their report card! Of course I do not just need these tablets to fill in a report card grade because I want my students to be 21st century learners.

These tablets will give my students access to the world outside our classroom.

For example, when I teach a unit on animal biomimicry, my students will be able to go on the tablets to research biomimicry. Perhaps, they will even find a live webcam where engineers are creating a plane based on bird's wings.

During math, my students will be able to survey first graders around the world and create graphs based on their results. There are endless teaching and learning opportunities if I can get the tablets in my students' hands. I cannot wait to show you what my students do as a result of having these tablets in our classroom!
