My Students

My school is located in Queens, N.Y., the most culturally and ethnically diverse neighborhood in the world. The athletes who participate on my team come from all over NYC. They possess tremendously different skill levels that range from players who have never played table tennis to those who have played just for fun to those who have played competitively for years. Some players may have physical, learning, or emotional disabilities and some may also come from economically disadvantaged homes or reside in shelters.

Regardless of the differences that exist between them regarding culture, language, or skill level, they build a beautiful chemistry as a team and are wonderfully supportive of one another.

It truly is magical to watch how they transform from individuals with such differing backgrounds to a cohesive and unified team. Our boys and girls table tennis teams each consist of 22 players from diverse cultural backgrounds. They are eager to learn and motivated to push themselves to do their best. There is an atmosphere of acceptance and trust within the team that encourages these athletes to step out of their comfort zone and challenge themselves to set high goals that they can work toward together.

My Project

School budgets do not allow room for sports supplies and it is very difficult to train a table tennis team without tables, nets, proper table tennis balls, and proper paddles. Having the necessary equipment allows the team to have efficient training practices where they can build and strengthen their skills.

Proper training gives the team an advantage as they prepare to go up against challenging opponents.

Having the materials they need builds confidence and helps the team to build chemistry as they train together. In addition, when we are the home team for matches we are required to provide these supplies which is difficult if there is not funding to purchase what is needed.
