My Students

My school has a unique feel and in a unique situation. All of the students are classified special education, but not in the classical sense. Yes they suffer developmental delays associated with most special education students, many of our students are high functioning autistic or suffer from debilitating emotional disabilities.

Students use our school as a stepping stone, a transition school from a special education high school, or a psychiatric hospital, to a traditional high school setting.

Many of these students get bussed in from all over New York City and are given an opportunity to be transitioned into a setting like most of their peers

My Project

My students enjoy playing Table Tennis on a level I cannot explain. The focus on the ball and quick short movements hold their attention better than anything. The students feel safe playing, and based on their rough and traumatic backgrounds they really gravitate towards the game. The school was able to form a team, our only team in the school, and it has become something the entire school has been able to rally around. We have inferior equipment and it shows when we attended matches. I want to provide my students with the opportunity to gain some much needed confidence and happiness and playing with equipment equal to the teams we play will give them that.
