Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Teaching in a low-income high school in Harlem, NY comes with a little bit of heartbreak and a lot of reward. Low-income urban school districts are constantly under fire from the government, parents, and community members and teachers leave poor urban schools at a much higher rate due to a lack of resources.

I have been teaching Math in public high schools for nine years and very much enjoy working with students in the classroom.

However, my most favorite thing to do in the school building is coach and spend time with the students outside of the classroom. Coming from the pandemic, none of our students have been around their classmates for almost two years. They are eager to be a part of a club, team, or anything that can give them a sense of community!

My Project

Our students need paddles and foldable tables for our new Table Tennis Team.

Our school is in need of an equalizer sport, a sport that can bring students of all kinds of athletic levels together.

Table tennis fits the bill, but our students need the proper equipment to bring them together. Unlike basketball or football, participation in table tennis would bring together more students who may have not spent years playing previously. Our school is in need of a winter sport that can attract the diversity of students that we have in our school.

Table tennis will bring us together! With this starting set of equipment, we will be able to start recruiting and training our new table tennis team. Mobile equipment will make it easier for our students to get started.
