Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have 23 energetic fifth graders in my New York City classroom. Many of the children come from low-economic households, but they have big dreams. They understand the importance of a good education. Most of the students attend after-school programs as well, so they spend the majority of their day in school.

My students work both in homogeneous groups and in heterogeneous groups in order to accomplish their daily learning targets.

We not only focus our academic goals, but on our social-emotional goals as well. We are involved with the Leader in Me program and practice our 7 Habits of Happy Kids. We understand that in order to be successful in school, we must always try our best. We motivate each other and work as a team.

My Project

I am a strong believer in flexible seating because I have noticed the difference in students since I started using it. The children choose which flexible seating or as we call it "Smart Seat" works best for them. A "Smart Seat" is a seat in the classroom in which they feel comfortable in and can work hard at. Flexible seating makes the room cozy and feel more like a second home. As adults, we can all recall being stuck sitting in a chair all day long whether it was in school or at work. It is not comfortable at all. We can not focus on our work when we do not feel comfortable. Flexible seating also allows the students to move around the room during different academic activities and work better in small groups.

Adding a high table and two stools to the classroom will give my fifth graders special area in the room where they can have peer conferences and teacher-reader conferences.

It will promote book talks, peer tutoring, and the opportunity to share what they have read with a classmate. It will also be used by me when I have to conduct a one on one reading assessment with a student. Sitting in the special area will actually feel like a treat to the children since it is unlike most of the seating they get to sit at in school or even at home.

As a teacher, I really want my class to become a family and feel like the classroom is their second home. After all we spend a lot of time in the room working to achieve our goals and learning targets.
