Help Ms. Ahern

Our classroom is a small, intensive and therapeutic learning environment for high school students with significant, multiple disabilities. The 5 to 8 students in our classroom, ages 13 to 18, are bussed from two states to be able to access the most appropriate educational environment for them. All of the students are primarily non-speaking, many use mobility devices, like wheelchairs, to get from place to place, some have low vision and/or hearing impairment. All of the students work hard to make small strides towards success every day.

Learners with significant disabilities learn best in a language rich environment which matches picture symbols to printed text. Such a setting promotes traditional literacy as well as knowledge of picture symbols as a means to understanding and communicating. Books, programs and software that teach age appropriate curriculum at a developmental level that works for my students through the use of picture symbols are expensive and not in the budget in these times of financial crisis.

The purchase of a variety of picture symbol based materials, including interactive reading books, science curriculum and a math program, would put the materials my students need to learn best into their hands. These materials will introduce curriculum, while teaching picture symbols.

Your donation to this project will make an important difference in the lives of students with significant and multiple disabilities. You will make it possible for my students to not only learn about age appropriate curriculum, like reading, science and math, but will also increase their communicative abilities.
