This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach first-graders at a Headstart through 5th-grade school in North Miami Beach. Most of my students are high-poverty and have limited resources at home. My students are always excited to use technology in the classroom and when we do center activities, they rush for the workstations to explore online resources. For most of our students, Internet access and the use of computers are a luxury that they do not have at home.

Most of my students daily face the challenges of coming to school with basic supplies.

Most do not have computer access at home. As of this month, we are officially a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) school, therefore technology has now infiltrated every aspect of how our classes are taught. Unfortunately, most of our students start the school year with fewer supplies and less access to the tools they need to be successful.

My Project

Our school was just recently made a STEAM school and we are all excited about this new honor and challenge. With this challenge, first grade now has to step up in terms of technology and resources. Our school has a computer lab that is used for district and state-wide testing for our students, as well as online practice and assessments for math, reading, and science, but during certain times of the school year, the lab is reserved for the upper grades. I have a few Chromebooks and computers in my room for certain applications, such as iReady and MyOn, that require the use of headphones because there are video lessons and sound clips, etc.

Currently, we do not have sufficient working headphones in the classroom and I have to borrow from other teachers or ask the children to bring their own.

If this project is funded, our classroom will have enough headphones for every child using a computer for testing or to learn/practice on the computer.
