This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
During guided reading time, my students sit on cracked, unsafe chairs that wobble back and forth. These chairs get worse and worse every year and I no longer have enough chairs for my students to use when working with me. In addition, these chairs are too small for my students to be comfortable.
I have the privilege of teaching 48 fifth graders reading and language arts.
They are strong willed and filled with personality. My students attend a high poverty school with Title I services. English language learners make up half of our student population. What our school lacks in resources, we make up for in determination to succeed.
My Project
I am requesting six swivel chairs for my guided reading table. I do not have enough chairs in my classroom for my students to have at their desk and my small group table. I am requesting swivel chairs, because my students are in fifth grade. These chairs are large enough for them to sit and learn comfortably. I also would like to teach them how to appropriately sit in a chair that swivels. It may sound silly, but it is a basic skill that they need to learn in order to be professional. I spend a great deal of time trying to fix the chairs I have so that they do not wobble or to repair the legs so that they can hold a student. The cracks in the chairs often catch on the students' clothing and are uncomfortable to sit on. My hope is that the new colorful chairs will grab their attention to that they will be more excited to participate in guided reading or to receive extra help at my back table. In the end, I need dependable furniture that my students feel safe using.
I would like these chairs so that my students are excited to come and read during guided reading time.
Most importantly, I want them to be comfortable and to feel safe in our classroom. The chairs that I have take away from my instructional time. This occurs when I have to fix them and when I have the students complaining about how much they hate sitting in them. Your donation will make guided reading a more enjoyable experience overall.
