Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Having switch-activated toys and adapting toys to be switch-compatible will allow students to play together like they haven't before, building relationships with each other. Adapters will help students with limited mobility access toys like the spinner which can build social bonds and skills during interactive lessons and play.

The students we work with have varying physical and developmental challenges, such as muscular dystrophy, severe autism, cerebral palsy, intellectual disability, among other conditions, making it difficult to engage with materials in a neurotypical or functional way.

This goes for not only toys, but appliances as well that most students take for granted (such as pencil sharpeners). We have a small supply of switches already in our possession but we do not have the means to make adapt them for everyone in our school, nor do we have any toys that are switch compatible.

Hopefully in the future, I can expand this foundation to life skills and activities of daily living, such as using switches to activate appliances for cooking or hygiene. But for now, we need to start small and I know these things will help!
