Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. I try to provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.

I proudly teach children who are on the Autism Spectrum.

I teach students who are in a self-contained setting, non-verbal, can not write and who have intense behavioral issues. In addition, I serve students with Severe Learning Disabilities who are included in the general curriculum and require extensive accommodations in order to reach their greatest potential. I work with one blind/mute student with Autism, who is self-injurous. My students are loving. They are daydreamers. They are what makes me wake up in the morning. They love to learn, even faced with these great obstacles. Always with a smile on their face. They deserve a chance to learn like any other child. They face challenges everyday that their non-disabled peers do not face in a lifetime.

My Project

In order to complete our class sensory project, my students need the frame in order to accommodate the swing that we already received. This swing will be available to all students with Autism in our program. This will be used for positive reinforcement and sensory input. I am trying to build a sensory room because our school has a large Autism population which comes with different challenging behaviors.

My students appreciate everything we do for them and I believe that this project would be very beneficial to the majority of my students.

I am hoping that the use of this equipment for positive reinforcement will make a positive change in their day.
