My Students

My Students: Have you ever taken a dance class in the heat of the city? I know I did as a young dancer. It almost changed my life. I was always so uncomfortable and embarrassed about sweating that I almost gave up dancing for good. I do not want that scenario for any of my students.

I teach dance to Pre-K through 5th grade students in a basement room at an elementary school in the Bronx, NY.

My students are almost all from high poverty level immigrant families trying very hard to make a better life for their children. None of my students has ever had, to my knowledge, any access to private dance schools or dancing lessons. Therefore, my classes are always highly sought after. My students come to my class eager to learn, eager to move. I enjoy their energy. I enjoy the freeness of their movements in my room. My space is a "safe" space for every child. He/she knows that as long as the "rules" are followed, there is no criticism allowed. Each child is allowed to find his/her own joy in dance with my kids, this might change from day to day. For instance, one day a student might be hung ho to dance and the next feel quite lethargic. Within limits, this is OK in my room. It is really all about the kids and their joy of dancing.

My Project

Each time the temperature rises my students wilt. It is simply not healthy. None of us can breathe in my basement dance room. We all, students and teacher alike, sweat as we dance. The dancing no longer is fun and everything stops. I know that there are many children with asthma in my school. The lack of fresh air in my room, particularly when it is hot is especially dangerous to them. But, really everyone suffers in the heat, and the energy and excitement that was so motivating literally melts away.

I hope that there are some very generous people out there who can see the important need for a portable air conditioner for my dance room.

(Since my room is in the basement, I cannot use an ordinary window air conditioner.) I am thanking you in advance for making my life as a teacher a bit easier, a bit, no, a lot more comfortable. My students and I will be so grateful if this wish is fulfilled. Thank you.
