Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"I pledge allegiance to myself and who I want to be..." Each day, we begin our class with a promise that helps my students focus on what they want to do and to learn today to make their future dreams a reality. It's a reminder that we start each day with a positive attitude. We know that there will be challenges, but we also know that we can handle them. We can't control our circumstances, but we do control how we respond to them.

"I can't wait to make a mistake!" From day one, we foster a safe community of learners in our room.

If a student doesn't feel comfortable, they won't try anything new. We are all learners, and support each other in taking risks and making mistakes, because we know that is where the real learning happens. Ours is a Title I school, serving a largely immigrant, Latino population, in a densely-populated urban city. Statistically destined to drop out before they complete high school, my students aspire to go beyond the stereotypes, and be the first college graduates in their family. There are no shortcuts!

My Project

We have an active classroom. The students know that our room is their room. The walls are set up to shine a light on their individual work. They showcase their hard work and growth.

Seeing your hard work beautifully spotlighted for others to admire empowers students.

Having bold and bright colors to work with enhance the room and encourage students to give their best effort. They take real ownership of their growth on display. We use rubrics and checklists to critique our work to see where we are, how we've grown, and what we can keep working on. Your support brings great materials into the hands of students.
