My Students

The students at my school are at once wonderful and troubled; curious and mistrusting; giving and needy; and worldly and sheltered. The circumstance of their young lives often prevents them from achieving academically to their full potential. The availability of opportunities to expand their knowledge beyond basic curriculum is often stunted, and it is through stakeholders and resources such as Donorschoose.org that allow the children to be made privy to more than their "ordinary" education.

The children thrive with the benefits of high interest, hands-on engaging activities, and are eager to learn.

My Project

Tennis is the ultimate sport for kids who have lots of energy, lots of space, and a love of ball sports. My students have all three- but don't have proper equipment. We've played sporadically with the four "well-loved" rackets during some recesses of our last school year. A set of new rackets, new balls, and a ball hopper will not only increase the fun, but add to the exercise levels of the students who were not able to play, due to the dearth of equipment at my school.

Reading about the fabulous role models of Venus and Serena Williams has captured the imagination and interest of my students - and learning to play tennis like those phenomenal players who not only look like them but have also responded to our class' letters - will be a coup!

Students will also learn and practice the benefits of team sports, large muscle agility, cooperation, taking turns, and collaboration. Students will sharpen their levels of focus, concentration and even posture! Tennis is not a typical "urban sport," and adding this skill to my students' repertoire will increase their opportunities in their future, as this type of extra-curricular activity is imperative for college, and also, for a child who is deemed to be well-rounded.

We would love to have the items in our school, and the added plus of having the low-calorie incentive snack-dispensed in a fun way, will of course augment the fun!
