I am a first year NYC Teaching Fellow, and I teach 2nd grade in a portable classroom at PS 202 in East New York. All 17 of my students receive free school lunch. Since September I've tried very hard to create a fun, comfortable, and visually stimulating learning environment for my students. We have plants, interesting charts, poems, artwork, and colorful decorations all over our classroom. However, one problem that I'm facing is a space issue. I do not have and can not get additional furniture for my classroom from the school. They simply don't have any furniture to give me. This poses a problem during independent reading time, and at other times when children are working independently or with partners, because even though I'd like the children to have an area to work that is not their desk, I simply don't have one to offer them. Sometimes I let the kids work on the carpet a few at a time, but I really am not crazy about that idea. The rug is not cleaned/disinfected by the school. Ever. I vacuum daily, but of course this does not disinfect. This always bothered me, but especially bothers me now, since a new foster child in my class recently had an accident on the carpet. I informed every school supervisor, and of course nothing was done about it. Needless to say, there are no replacement carpets available in the school. Aside from the cleanliness issue, the carpet is too small for all of my students to fit on at once. Not to mention that my kids will soon be 3 graders, are getting bigger, and no longer feel so comfortable sitting on a carpet. Yet another issue is that most of my students have asthma, and I'm sure having a dust/germ collecting carpet sitting in the classroom is not helping those students. Unfortunately the carpet must stay, because NYC Dept. of Education mandates that it must be there. So I am trying to work around this, by requesting some chairs to add to our classroom. I want the students to feel comfortable, and to have the opportunity to sit down and read a book in a comfortable, cozy spot if they'd like to. Since I cannot fit 17 chairs in my classroom, I am asking for 2. Different students will get to use the chairs daily during independent work time. Not only will it be an incentive for the children, but it will help achieve a pleasant and fun classroom environment. I have found a chair on Ikea's website that I think would be great for our classroom. It is from Ikea's new kids' line, called Ikea PS. It has a pull down hood which I think will be great in allowing the kids to really feel comfortable and cozy, and really get absorbed in a great book. I am requesting 2 of these chairs, as that is all I really have room for right now. Hopefully the rug-mandate will be removed soon so I'll have room for more chairs!
