Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from a variety of diverse backgrounds. I have second-language learners, native English speakers, autistic students, struggling readers, avid readers, ADD and ADHD students, and students from low-class families. Many of the students are in Philadelphia because they have been displaced from their homes in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria.

At my school, the motto is "Live, Dream, Achieve." My students know that wherever they come from has little bearing on where they're going.

As long as they work hard, they can have whatever life they want. This applies especially to the students who are new to the country.

It is up to them and the choices they make to help them succeed. We have high academic and behavior expectations, and they rise to meet the challenges set before them.

My Project

The materials requested are going to help not only with campus beautification but also teach students how to garden. The rakes, shovels, gloves, dirt, stones, paint, and seeds are all going to be used to help educate students of all ages the importance of gardening. There is very little green space where we are in the city, but the students have asked to learn about plants and to get healthier. As a school we have decided to come together to make a multipurpose after school club. As a school community we are going to work on a campus clean up, then move into the beautification part.

Our first step is to rewards students with good behavior and grades to come into the building and decorate stones to offer color before the flowers bloom.

Those who want to do the craft at home, will be able to do so also. With their teachers student from grades Prek- 8 will be planting seeds, flowers and helping to maintain the garden space. The seeds are expecting to plant will be various vegetables with a spring, summer and fall planned harvest. Many of the students in our. community do extended school year, so our building is always open with staff and students in it. Since fresh produce is very expensive in the city so this project is to help provide our cooking club and multiple disabilities classes with healthy alternatives for meals they prepare. We are looking to teach the students the fundamentals of gardening as well as how and when to harvest and how to cook using the vegetables.
