My students are amazing, brilliant advanced math fourth graders in a school with students from over 50 countries. In 60% of their homes, families speak languages other than English. In spite of their circumstances, these students excel in ways that inspire me every day. For the last four years, our advanced 5th graders have placed in the top three places in the Stock Market Game for eastern North Carolina, with first place three of those years! They deserve the best!
My Project
Entrepreneurs and sustainability—the perfect combination! Our advanced math learners will apply math and writing skills to developing business plans for creating sustainable products: reusable grocery/tote bags that they design themselves. Students will study business plan design to apply for micro-loans (loaning of materials for their businesses) and develop a financial statement that accounts for the cost of materials and labor. They will also study graphic design to develop an iron-on for their line of reusable bags. Each class "company" will develop its own line and market their products. Proceeds will create real-life international micro-loans they select through KIVA.
