Sustainable Agriculture

Help me give my students tools for our agriculture class. We build and upkeep a variety of farming systems, and are in need of composting equipment, pruning tools, power tools, and lawn maintenance equipment.

My Students

The semester is flying by, and my students have done so much to be proud of! As they develop, they show pride in themselves and our school. This school services PreK-8th grade, with 100% of our student body receiving free and reduced lunch and breakfast.

Speaking of lunch and breakfast, here, these students operate a zero-waste food composting program, and they are enthusiastic and proud of the work they do!

For a semester now, these students have shown they want to respect the environment and motivate each other by undertaking the responsibility and privilege of contributing to our school and global community's well-being!

My Project

The materials we seek will support the continuation of the food recycling initiative run by my students. It will also help us to build significant structures, such as a peace garden, as well as creating spaces for nostalgic crops like sugar cane and pineapple, and cultural crops such as gourds, 'ulu, kalo, as well as medicinal plants like turmeric, ti leaf, chili pepper, and more.

By taking this career and technical education course, students are engaged in practical as well as technical knowledge, having the opportunity to apply it as we build our farm.

So far, we have composted over 1,000 pounds of food waste, which we will use to sustain the planting we want to do here. With waste coming in everyday, we are in need of more tarps, which we cover our compost piles with while they decompose.

Around February or March, my students should be able to harvest some of these compost piles. To do this, we will need tools such as snow shovels and wagons. I am looking forward to seeing their faces when they see what became of the sloppy messes and funky smells they worked to transform.

In addition, we are creating a peace garden. It will be made of a circle of Kukui, or Candlenut, which we will plant. In order to create and maintain this and other parts of our garden and farm, we will need pruning and digging tools, wagons for hauling, and lawn maintenance equipment such as a push mower. Lastly, we could use a screwdriver to make and post signage for this and other places in our garden.
