My Project

The students in our Green Teams enjoy learning about the environment. However, their goal is not to keep this knowledge to themselves. They are sustainably compelled to share what they learn. As faculty advisors, we promote student leadership and we are committed to empowering students by providing them with opportunities to use their voices to share and advocate for themselves and the environment.

At our most recent brainstorming session with our Green Team 1 members, it was suggested that they would be interested in reading books about the environment.

The idea of a Sustainability Lending Library, where students could sign out "high interest" books, was born. The students themselves researched titles of sustainability-themed books and presented them to their faculty advisors. In addition to reading the books in school and at home, they also suggested that as part of their community service, they could read to the younger students in our school. As faculty advisors of Green Teams 1 & 2, we will use these books to assign further research, develop vocabulary-building activities, and other creative post-reading activities such as devising questions for the main characters or writing reviews of the books.

What a wonderful way to ensure that our core Sustainability Values are kept alive at Brighter Choice Community School. Help us to Weaponize Literacy in our Battle against Sustainability!
