My Project

In this interdisciplinary project, students will read and analyze Emily St. John Mandel’s Station Eleven, a dystopian novel that explores the collapse of society in the wake of a global pandemic. The novel intricately weaves together themes of survival, the persistence of art and culture, and the fragile balance between humanity and the environment. Through their reading, students will examine the interconnectedness of climate change, environmental degradation, and the societal repercussions of pandemics.

Students will analyze how Mandel portrays a world affected by catastrophic events and the ways in which these events alter both the physical and social landscapes.

Students will focus on themes of resilience, human adaptability, and the broader environmental impact in a post-pandemic world.

Students will deepen their ability to analyze a complex, layered text and connect literary themes to real-world issues.

Students will connect the novel’s themes to broader discussions about climate change, environmental sustainability, and the global effects of pandemics on society.

Students will synthesize their literary analysis through both written and visual means, allowing them to explore creative ways of conveying their understanding. Students will be challenged to synthesize their analysis of Station Eleven and real-world issues into a coherent and well-structured argument in an essay format.

By the end of the project, students will have a deep understanding of Station Eleven and its exploration of themes like environmental collapse, survival, and the human spirit. They will be able to make connections between the novel and real-world issues, particularly those related to climate change and the societal impacts of pandemics. Students will demonstrate their understanding through written and creative means, synthesizing literary analysis with real-world applications. They will also gain experience in presenting and discussing their ideas in a gallery-style format, enhancing both their communication and creative thinking skills.
