Surviving Middle School Through Relationship Building

Help me give my students books for opportunities to work in groups to build better and stronger relationships. A printer is also needed so that we can print out worksheets and such to make our limited resources stretch further.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The last year and a half has had many and varied effects on our children and scholars. One of the most impactful effects is the lack of appropriate socialization. My students, particularly the girls, are struggling with their relationships to each other, to their teachers and with their families as well. The pandemic interrupted the natural processes of social growth and development, and has left students struggling more than usual during their middle school years.

I would like to host a girl's book club to help my girls build relationships through reading, discussing and creating an environment of unity, where there has been one of conflict and division.

I would like to purchase 10 copies of the book, Goodbye Stranger, for this book club. This will benefit my students in so many ways. It will encourage more time spent reading, build stronger language skills and help them develop communication skills, as well as build stronger relationships amongst the girls on campus.

My Project

I want to start a book club to help adolescent girls develop communication and interpersonal skills. The book "Goodbye Stranger" is an excellent resource for this. In addition, in pandemic recovery, I have seen a lot of anger in my students, and I am requesting an anger management workbook to help them process these strong emotions. Finally, I do not have immediate access to any kind of printer. To be able to print and use resources that I have accessed digitally allows me to immediately put the resource into action, rather than waiting until I can get to the copy room to make the 1 or 2 copies that are needed at the moment.

As this school year has progressed, the amount of trauma that is evident from each and every student is almost overwhelming.

Utilizing something like a book club is a way to address more serious issues in a format that the students will be more open to discussing and feel less defensive.
