Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
One of the students' favorite projects of the year is their Fall Expo project: Survival Story Dioramas! Students spend six weeks carefully writing and editing a creative narrative about a main character on an important journey. These stories are modeled after our class novel, A Long Walk to Water, by Linda Sue Park, which tells the true story of Salva Dut, a young boy who escaped the civil war in his home country, Sudan, and journeyed through Ethiopia to Kenya to find a safe haven.
After students write their creative survival story narrative, they craft a diorama of the setting of their story and map their characters' journey.
These dioramas are shown off to families, staff, and community members on our Fall Expo night! Every year, this project is a highlight for students and families!
