My Students

Our classroom windows overlook a service road of a major highway in Queens, NY. We've come to love the white noise of the cars whooshing by and the planes flying overhead into the two major airports nearby. To be honest, on most days we are so busy learning, we don't even notice these things! Unfortunately, over the last few months, many of those sounds were replaced by sirens, as we became the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic.

Many of our students are children of essential workers and therefore are left home with older siblings or grandparents for the duration of the school day.

They are trying their best, but it is becoming increasingly difficult to motivate them. They miss their classroom, their routine, their friends, and their entire school community.

Also, many students are children of immigrants whose native language is not English. This creates an even larger challenge to remote learning for these students.

My Project

Living in quarantine can become very monotonous. So many of these children are really struggling with things to look forward to. Much of their fun has been taken away from them.

We would like to bring smiles back on their faces by gifting each of them with a surprise goody bag.

We know how much it would mean to them to get a gift bag from their teachers. Inside the bags, we plan to include a copy of one of our favorite series books, some scented pencils and erasers, and a journal for writing.
