Supportive Environment for Project-Based Learning

Help me give my students a more communal environment that will effectively incorporate student-led learning and create a safe place for them to store their phones to minimize distractions.

My Project

As a result of lockdowns, social distancing, and remote learning, students have had fewer opportunities to interact with their peers. This lack of in-person contact hindered the development of social skills like communication, empathy, and conflict resolution. Not to mention the increased use of tech (cell phones and laptops) because of remote learning and socializing through digital platforms have led many students to become very dependent on their tech. While technology can help with communication, too much screen time has affected their ability to engage in meaningful in-person interactions and develop non-verbal communication skills.

The materials that I am requesting will allow students to have a safe place to leave their phones while class is in session so as to reduce the temptation to check social media, play games, or chat with friends who are not in class.

Some of the other materials will help with more project-based learning that I am designing my classroom around. I want to have students engage in more projects or tasks that require students to participate in real-world problem-solving, critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and most importantly communication. Specific examples that I have are group discussions where students will use the chalk markers to write on small white boards to respond to a prompt, students will also be participating in group games where they will use the buzzers. The laminating sheets will go towards preserving the printouts that I will use for station work, and the label maker will be used to label items that students will use around the classroom. The magnets will be used to display students' work on the whiteboard, and the stickers will be used as a reward system.
