My Students

Returning to the classroom this year has been both exciting to feel the boundless social energy of 7th graders and challenging to consider how to help them process their recently lived experiences. I soon realized I too had my own need to process the last two vacillating years of school life and that this is a challenge we face together this school year. When I was assigned an Advisory period multiple times a week I thought, this isn't really my area of expertise. I am used to teaching students about history, a study grounded in facts, less so in the emotional life of teenagers.

So I introduced art journaling with my students as a way for us to process the healing power of expressing our emotions creatively with a goal of learning more about ourselves and practicing self reflection.

Through our journal work, I have been able to share with my students my own love of bookmaking and use the freeing practice of journaling to share more of our life stories. With a student body of 1,300 students our school community faces challenges in programming and equal access to the arts so I feel this also contributes in this way.

My Project

This project will support students with their advisory art journaling specifically because is rewards students with lovely writing utensils that makes them love their words. The gift of colorful paper and glue will help them create meaningful collages and learn techniques of book designing. All of our journaling takes place during our Advisory time together where we explore goal setting, writing about our state of mind, emotions, memories, and consider using art as a form of relaxation and stress release within the busy 7th grade school environment. Your gift can inspire students, both those who are confident in artistic expression and those who feel more closed off to creativity, to be more willing to add colorful inspirations to journaling prompts that will get them to think more deeply about themselves. More importantly, the journals can motivate students to share more about their lives and lived experiences and serve as a form of wellness.
