My Students

My students are fantastic, wonderful, amazing, and pleasant fifth graders, and are in their final year of Elementary School! Very soon, they will be off to middle school where they will continue to do wonderful and amazing things in their academic and personal lives!

Despite my students’ strong and sincere zeal for learning, they are daily victims of systemic challenges pertaining to finance, race, and other extraneous variables.

Brownsville, Brooklyn is one of the most economically devastated towns in New York, with 40% of its citizens living below the poverty line (an income of about $20,000 a year for a family of four). Over 75% of my students live in poverty. As a result, my school is a Title I School (according to the United States Department of Education) because of "high numbers or high percentages of children from low-income families." In essence, my students’ unique and highly intelligent minds are not being adequately or equitably educated or bettered due to bureaucratic reasons beyond their or their teachers’ control.

My Project

According to the United States Department of Commerce, there was a ten percent increase in STEM jobs, in 2010. These statistics will continue to rise. Similarly (and sadly), my students' lack of opportunities will continue to rise, due to systemic barriers that are beyond their control.

The absence of a well-rounded education is especially prominent in schools of at-risk communities, as well as the inclusion of a STEM education that is crucial nowadays.

Our school has limited funds for teachers to use during the school year, which is making it extremely difficult for me to purchase equipment to diversify my students' academic knowledge. I have already used my allotted funds to purchase essential school supplies for my students to use daily (i.e., pencils, pens, notebooks, etc.). Therefore, obtaining essential resources to broaden my bright students' knowledge associated with a STEM education is just a dream at the moment.

This project will instill my students with research skills, which is necessary for middle school, high school, college, and throughout life. Nonetheless, I will have them work on a project (in groups) that involves researching various energy sources and how they might design a system to sustain energy. Further, I will create small-scaled models with the multiple global crisis, it is essential for them to be aware and conscious of these issues constantly affecting us and our planet.

I fully believe that having a STEM education will benefit my students presently and in the future. Therefore, I know for a fact that funding from this project for a laptop (and carrying case) will permit my students to become exposed to a STEM education, which they axiomatically deserve! Quite honestly, all students deserve an equitable education. However, at-risk communities are too often deprived of receiving one.
