My Students

This is my fourth year teaching in a New York City public school. I am a special education teacher in a 2nd-grade ICT (Integrated Co-teaching) classroom.

I made it a priority as I started my career as a teacher that even though I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I know I can certainly control their POSITIVE experiences during the school day in a creative and positive way.

My students are creative, clever and very spontaneous. As a teacher in a title one school, my students are faced with various situations both in and out of the classroom. Half of my students are being raised in a single parent household and receive free/reduced lunch based on their socioeconomic status. My school is a comprised of a good percentage of students with IEP’s and students who are English Language Learners. Even though these things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us take for granted. Despite the many situations they face, from the minute my students walk in the door of my classroom, I center on their innocence, growth and positivity.

My Project

My 2nd graders all have different personalities and learning styles. It is difficult to keep everyone focused at once. To ensure that everyone’s needs are being met, a lot of the instruction taking place in the classroom are differentiated. The students are constantly on the move from one side of the room to the next in different seating options. Sometimes it feels we spend more time trying to get some of the students settled than doing the actual work at their assigned seats.

In second grade, independence is important to my students and I.

The goal is to get the student’s focus on learning and staying on-task. This is the current goal for half of the students in my class. I have students who sit on the floor so that they can do their best learning and it is a request I accept gladly. I have students quietly stand because they do their best learning that way. The cushions and kick bands will support their active movement and keep students focused on their work while being less distracting to their peers around them. Lap trays will offer support to complete their independent tasks.

Your donations will support our different learning styles tremendously. My goal as a teacher is to make sure my student’s needs are addressed and met. With your help, I can achieve that in my classroom.
