Supporting Our English Language Learners Through Reading

Please help me give my students support for learning English. Our English language learners need books to help them learn English and Spanish versions of the novels they read in class to help with understanding.

My Project

In recent years, our school has had a growing number of Spanish-speaking students learning English as their second language. These students spend 3 hours a day in an ESL (English as a second language) class and the rest of the day in regular high school classes immersed in English. Our library has expanded our Spanish section to attract more of these students, but they need more titles that can be used in class.

We are seeking the Spanish versions of multiple books used in our English II, III, and IV curricula to scaffold learning and help support our English language learners.

These students often fall behind in their English classes because they are not only trying to do the work required in class but also learning English and comprehending what they read.

We want to provide Spanish versions of these novels so they can read in their native language to ensure understanding and follow along more quickly in class with discussions and lessons. Because this would be used for all English Language Learners, we would house these books in the library to be available to all students and teachers needing them.
