My Project

The high school I work at has a very large, diverse population that is made up of a very high percentage of low-socioeconomic status students. Many of them struggle to bring basic supplies at times, but we try not to let that interfere with their learning. Providing them with pencils is a HUGE help, because many break, lose, or forget them throughout the year. Providing basic items like this helps remove a basic barrier to accessing learning.

This isn't just for some type of traditional note-taking, but also for them to journal and reflect on their mathematical ideas and understandings while we do a variety of activities.

We do many activities in class in pairs or as groups. Student talk is key, and having sheet protectors to create an environment where students have to work in the middle, collaboratively (while also cutting down on paper use) is extremely helpful in supporting this process.

I'm also working toward de-fronting the classroom, so that I can provide more access to myself as a resource to students, instead of being tethered to a corner of the room where my laptop connects to the projector. I was able to be gifted an iPad thanks to this site, and now I am seeking other tools to make it fully functional so I can annotate on the go, while I talk to students and debrief in the classroom.
