My Project

My students come to school from different backgrounds. Some of them are newcomers to the States. They like to learn and I can tell because they seem so happy when they get a correct answer. However, they are struggling with math and literacy. Both math and literacy are important not only for school but also for the interactions of daily life. While I try to help them build these skills in order to succeed, I see that they need some snacks to fill their stomachs for them to focus on learning. High school students have a lot of energy and eat a lot. Most of the time I hear them saying things like "I'm starving, Miss; do you have any snacks? I want juice." On occasion, they cut the class just to go out of school to eat some snacks. At this school, most students are black, and Latinos who come from low-income households.

I’d like to provide my students with some snacks and juice to help fill their hunger.

Hence, keeping them in class, safe and ready to learn. Class is where they belong instead of cutting class. To keep the juice fresh, cool, and protected from mice I need a small fridge. We are in New York City, many buildings have mice/rats. I'd like to keep the juice in a safe place and cool. I also need for my classroom some basic classroom materials that help facilitate the teaching process and organizing of students' work. The juice and snacks are the most attractive things to bring high school students to class, in order to guarantee their safety (instead of leaving the class) and guarantee their learning to prepare good future leaders. Your donation will support a more equitable education.
