This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My Photo Program crew is made up of creative, energetic, funny and driven young teenagers. They come to our school from all over the city, and come together in my room weekly to build a creative family. For 8 years the Photo Program has involved hundreds of teenagers, photographed their teachers, friends, families and communities, and published their work in books and slideshows. It makes a real impact on how my students see themselves and their world.

For many of my students coming from under-resourced middle schools, it's their first time creating a meaningful photograph image that is not a selfie!

It's their first time looking at and analyzing other photographs, the first time they've met a professional photographer who looks like them, and the first time they've had to control a piece of professional photographic equipment. It is a transformative experience for all of us! From the classroom to the street to their homes, my photography students see their world in a new way, and we are so lucky they share their images with us!

My Project

I run an after school photography program to with awesome high school students. This will be our 8th year, and we need new equipment! This Canon Rebel camera will help our young photographers make more beautiful and powerful images. Often, our young photographers must use their phones or older, lower quality cameras. This is not terrible, but it makes a HUGE difference in their understanding of photographic principles like exposure when they have access to higher quality DSLR cameras like the Canon Rebel. The quality of their images increases as well as their experience telling their own powerful visual stories.
