Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Everyday is an opportunity to teach and learn alongside my wonderful class. Their positive attitudes and open minds for inquiry allow them to try new skills and topics. They love a learning challenge, and if they fall short, they know they can reach their goals through hard work, perseverance, support from one another, and the power of yet.

Most importantly, my students respect one another's backgrounds.

My class is made up of military families, and families from all around our country and world. I have students from Texas, Hawaii, Vietnam, the Philippines, and Mexico. They've realized that, even though they speak a variety of languages, they have recognized and celebrated their differences, and found common threads that unite them as people. In short, they are a microcosm of our country--learning and living while respecting one another's differences.

My Project

My students love music and its connection to learning. I incorporate songs to learn math algorithms, grammar rules, the writing process, and character lessons. We attend monthly sings to improve our reading by singing the lyrics to silly songs, and songs about friendship. We're also working on a musical that emphasizes good character.

But this year I want to teach my students an instrument, so I have returned to school to learn how to play the guitar.

I'm also learning how to sing and create songs to support student learning. My goal is to pass on the gift of music by teaching my students how to play the ukulele, and how to sing and compose songs.

With the use of half a class set of ukuleles, I can assign music partners so that part of my class can listen and watch as their classmates learn new chords and songs. Then the players will switch and hand the ukulele to their partner so they can practice, too. Students will enjoy partner support and encouragement, while I can teach more effectively with half a class of 28. We will begin a new tradition of putting on a recital for our parents and younger grades. We want to spread the love of music through your help.

Research has shown how playing an instrument improves cognitive brain function, spatial-temporal skills, language development, and discipline. Most of all, it's fun to learn a whole new skill through music. With your help, I can enrich my class through teaching my third graders the ukulele. Thank you in advance for supporting my students, and our love of music.
