My Students

NRMS is located on Cape Cod, an area rich in natural resources and opportunities for outdoor learning. To support this learning style we have used community support to build The Nauset Greenhouse, an Outdoor Learning Lab and a Makerspace where students get to build using actual materials and tools.

As these two learning spaces continue to evolve, we actively reach out to provide programs for all learning levels.

Next year, we are piloting a curriculum based on a presentation sponsored by the Nauset Garden Club on how to sustain wildlife using native plants. We hope to recreate the 12 X 12 experiment run by Douglas Tallamy on how choosing to landscape using native plants in yards and green space is the best way people to support local food webs.

We will be studying a decorative garden and a green space near a pond on campus to prove his findings with students as the researchers. Then students will present their findings with the hopes of being granted a small 12 X 12 space to use as a native only planned green space, so the experiment can be replicated for years to come!

My Project

My students need a Cannon T3i camera bundle, a Brinno Time Lapse Camera bundle, digital recorder bundle, camping lights, backpack, twine, flower press, clipboard, a studio backdrop set, and solar powered spotlights to replicate Doug Tallamy's research on how native plants support the food web. We will use the Brinno camera and studio set up to create time lapse videos on the decreasing population of insects on Cape Cod. We will use the Canon Camera to take high quality images that will highlight native and non native plants and how they support or disrupt the local food web based on what insects are found in a 12 x 12 radius around. This experiment will lead to a video and book created by middle schoolers based on Douglas Tallamy's research presented in his Bringing Nature Home book. His findings showcase the importance of studying insects in pupa form to understand food webs, and we hope to replicate his findings here. His talk showcased the seamless interactions of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math- and how conservation is really a study of numbers. We want to show students how interactive and hands-on data can be.

Mr. Tallamy has no availability to come back and speak directly to our students, but has given one community member the rights to re-purpose his work as a curriculum that is easy to replicate in schools.

We also will utilize the new database his graduate students created on how to identify the best native plants based in any zip code in the US to create native landscape plans for our campus.

This project studies a wide range of content-from invasive species, biomimicry, food webs, carbon impact, nitrification, algal blooms, water quality, land use, environmental business practices, community planning, and how social groups and traditional education play a role in life long learning and saving our planet.
