In my special education class, I work with an 85% African-American male population, many of whom struggle with reading and engagement. The introduction of graphic novels has been a revelation. One student's journey stands out: he consistently refused to read standard text, finding it frustrating. When I introduced him to "The Crossover" graphic novel, his reaction was astonishing. The captivating visuals and compelling narrative instantly captured his attention, and he began to read independently for the first time. Graphic novels have this unique power to make reading more approachable and enjoyable for students who have previously struggled.
However, our classroom library lacks sports-related materials, despite our students' strong interest in sports.
By providing access to books that align with their passions, we aim to create a positive learning environment that fosters a genuine love for reading while celebrating their cultural and personal interests.
