Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Students have been greatly impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. Some have been displaced from their homes, either because someone in their family has fallen ill or do not have someone who can stay home with them. Some have struggled to get devices or internet so they may do their schoolwork from home.Some students live in small apartments with extended family members and do not have a space they can call their own. Since I teach 8th graders, many of my students will no longer experience senior activities, such as senior trips, prom and graduation. All of this has taken a toll on their ability to do schoolwork and have a sense of normalcy.

My Project

These are hard times for everyone, especially children whose safe space and creative platform was school. Without this structure in place, students may feel lost, frustrated or upset. Being able to express themselves through art can help them cope and move forward. These materials will include arts and crafts items to allow students to have an outlet for their creativity and feelings. Students will be able to have books to read for the remainder of the school year. While there are online resources, nothing beats having a physical copy in your hands to be able to fully engage. As an ENL teacher, there is nothing more important than getting my students to read.
