My Project

Our students come from over one hundred different countries and speak nearly sixty different languages They've been through a lot to get to my classroom! From month-long hikes through treacherous jungles, they've witnessed death and injustice. They've often fled in their home countries. They come to me with a great deal of trauma and mental health struggles. I teach English and "the language of school" to Newcomers from around the world and they often have significant mental and social/emotional needs that stretch far beyond the classroom. From families that are divided across continents, to the loss of pets and friends, my high schoolers are hurting and it often affects their classroom learning. This project and the materials I'm requesting will go a long way toward remedying some of this trouble. For example, the laptop I'm requesting will be the only one we will have in my room that can serve as a translation tool for them (none of them speak English yet) so they can share their thoughts, feelings and emotions with me. The rug and cushions will create a cozy and quiet space for them to retreat, where they'll be able to take a break from the cognitive load of learning English all day alongside all of their regular required high school subjects. The therapy book will give me more tools in supporting their emotional needs as we navigate their traumas together.
