Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are eager to learn and willing to work. I recently started a STEM club and the outpouring of excited young scientists and engineers was amazing. We gather each week to build, code, compete, and simply play with ideas. My goal is to continue to inspire my students to love and pursue STEM.

I teach around ninety 6th grade students every day.

These students come from all across the District of Columbia to attend our public charter school. To attend, students simply have to apply and win a lottery system; there is no achievement requirement. With students from every ward of the district, we have a huge range of diversity within our classrooms, including many ELL (English Language Learners) and special education students. The students are enthusiastic and ready to learn. They truly enjoy hands-on science experiences, often naming them as the "high" of the day in afternoon advisory. I hope to be able to provide them with even more authentic experiences within the classroom.

My Project

The new materials will help me to provide even more enrichment opportunities in STEM. The Lego Mindstorm Robot kit will allow students to design and create their own robots. Students can then use the included software to program their robots, applying the coding skills we have been learning. Through a series of challenges, such as programming a robot to follow a path or shoot a ball at a target, students will engage in the engineering cycle, planning, designing, testing, evaluating, and redesigning. The KEVA planks will also provide unique mathematical and architectural challenges as students try to replicate models from 2D images, build bridges, and create stable structures. Lastly, the AC adapter will make using our Snap Circuits kits a snap. The students love exploring different combinations of simple and integrated circuits, but batteries are expensive and drain quickly. AC adapters would release us from relying on batteries and allow us to complete even more projects with our kits.

Your donations to this project will help an aspiring STEM club in a small school get resources on par with what students in larger districts have access to.

My students are ready and excited to learn more about science and engineering, and you can help provide more hands on experiences that will inspire them to develop a lifelong love of the STEM field.
